"When asked to participate in a cultural exchange art exhibition in Japan in May of 1994, I accepted whole-heartedly. Having been to Japan the year before, I was inspired by the prospect of returning. I had never painted or demonstrated at a public exhibit of my work and was a bit nervous. I decided to work on a narrative still life that philosophically united aspects of Japan and the American West. Consequently, one of my two suitcases was filled with props and painting materials. It was a challenge painting for six days in front of the public but I enjoyed visiting with many of the wonderful, and very polite Kumamoto residents. After returning to Missoula, I was able to complete the painting in my relatively calm and quiet studio." The painting was later reproduced as a limited edition print. The image of this note card is from the limited edition print .
